Little did we know, Las Vegas was in for it's biggest snowfall since 1937.
It never (o.k., almost never) snows in Vegas! With the combination of little snow plow equipment and the storm hitting late in the afternoon with heavy winds and cold temperatures, I-15 was closed from Las Vegas all the way to San Bernadino.
Phil and Lisa were ahead of us by about two hours, so we were lucky and they called and let us know what was happening ahead of us. As we made it into St. George, they called and let us know about the road closure. We spent the night with Jenny and her family. Thank you Aunt Jenny!
Lisa and Phil had hit a scheduled interstate closure for road construction on I-15 around noon about 45 minutes past Vegas. They waited for THREE hours for the road to open. The traffic was NOT re-routed. People just had to wait! Just as it opened, the storm hit and hit hard. They were about an hour outside Vegas and had to turn around and "white knuckle" it back to Vegas for the night. Thank goodness for cell phones. We kept in constant touch.
The next morning, December 18, I-15 didn't open until around Noon. Phil and Lisa called to tell us that it was a parking lot again because of everyone trying to get on at the same time.
We decided to hang around Vegas for a little while and let the traffic thin out. It never thinned out.
This was the scene for two solid hours. In those two hours, we traveled a whopping ten miles!
We had to endure this traffic for one afternoon. Phil and Lisa had to do it twice and in the middle of the storm!
Traffic was stop and go all the way into Barstow. When the traffic came to a stop again for about another hour, and we realized it was because everyone had to pull off for the "fruit and agricultural" check, we about lost it. We made it though. We tried to laugh instead of cry. It helped. We never did cry. We were still excited to be going to California.
Southern California!
Why is our timing always so perfect?
Just lucky I guess!!!
